How to Crochet the Grit Stitch

Hey everyone!

Today I wanted to share another photo stitch tutorial with you. This is the Grit Stitch!

This stitch is so incredibly easy and versatile! You can use it on just about anything you can imagine. It’s great for clothing, dish cloths, blankets—anything that you would rather didn’t have a lot of holes. The Grit Stitch creates a virtually solid piece of fabric.

You only need a multiple of two stitches to get this look and a lot of patience since it’s all single crochets! Ha! 🙂

I used the Grit Stitch in my pattern called Mimi’s Ear Warmer Headband and the Faux Burlap and Lace Silverware Pockets that you can see at the links. The tighter stitching keeps the cold air from penetrating your ears. I have sensitive ears, so this is a big concern for me.

This tutorial is already assuming that you are familiar with how to make a chain and how to single crochet.

The written instructions are below the corresponding photo(s).

The yarn I used in this example is Caron Simply Soft in Pistachio and my hook is a Boye H/8 (5.00 mm) that I purchased at Wal-Mart.

Here’s a pin for your Pinterest boards to save the tutorial for later!

So let’s get started, shall we?

The Grit Stitch

foundation chain

First, you will start with a chain that is a multiple of two chains (or just an even number).

counting down to the 4th chain from the hook

Single crochet in the fourth chain from the hook that is just in front of my thumb.

Single crochet a second time in the same stitch you just single crocheted in. (So basically two single crochets in the same stitch.)

Skip one chain. Single crochet in the next chain in front of my thumb.

Single crochet again in the same chain. (So, two single crochets in the same space)

Continue working the pattern of skipping one chain and then two single crochets in the same chain until you come to the end.

With two chains left, skip the next chain and single crochet twice in the last chain.

(I’m pulling everything very tight so you can see the gaps and stitches. You don’t need to hold yours so tight.)

Skip the stitch that the chain 2 comes out of and single crochet in the next stitch just before my thumb.

Two single crochets in the very last stitch of the row. Chain 2. Turn your work.

Continue working the pattern starting each row where I have indicated with *** until your fabric piece measures your desired or indicated length.

  1. Hi Cyndy! It’s not a silly question. You will be going into the front of the stitch. Even when you turn your work, you will continue to insert your hook from the front. I’ve included some new photos since the old ones may not have been quite as clear as they should be. I hope this helps! Thanks!

  2. Hi Amanda! I believe that it is a bad photo that is causing the confusion. I am going to update that particular photo. Essentially, you will not be crocheting in the skipped stitch. The pattern is two single crochets in the same stitch, then skip a stitch and repeat. Once you turn and chain 2, you will skip the stitch the chain 2 comes out of and begin your 2 single crochets in the next stitch. I hope this helps! Thanks!

  3. Hello, thank you for this pattern. I am new to crochet, so this will be a silly question. When you turn your work, it appears you are crocheting in the skipped stitch from the row before, am I reading correctly? If you stated that and I missed it, my apologies. This is so pretty, I’m going to try it for a baby washcloth. Thank you!
