Halloween Bag Trio

October is here!

I hope you’re having an awesome week.

I’m here today with my first Halloween themed crochet pattern for you. I really enjoyed making these. They were quick and super easy.

UPDATE!!!

There are now video tutorials for the following bags:

SCARECROW (RIGHT HANDED VERSION)

PUMPKIN (RIGHT HANDED VERSION)

GHOST (RIGHT HANDED VERSION)

GHOST (LEFT HANDED VERSION)

I decided to stuff these cuties so they could be holiday decorations, but my husband suggested that they would also make great candy gift bags for kids! Pfft. Why didn’t I think of that? LOL!

All three bags use the same pattern made up of a foundation chain and single crochets. Just change the color when you make a different version.

Here is a pin for your Pinterest boards so you can save this pattern for later if you wish…

The scarecrow and ghost use crocheted pieces for their faces, but the pumpkin uses pieces of felt. I tried cross stitching the face on and crocheting pieces to sew on and nothing looked the way I envisioned it in my head, so I had to give in and use the felt. But…I’m glad I did, because it just looks so darn cute!

And yes, I made the ghost face crooked on purpose. I just didn’t want him rigid and symmetrical. There’s something about a ghost that should be kind of flowy and free form. Maybe it’s just me. You’re certainly free to make your ghost face any way that you please!

Can you think of any other uses for the spooky little Halloween Bag Trio? Let me know in the comments below!

Materials Used:

Finished Size Approximately:

9” H x 5¼” W

Gauge:

15 stitches and 19 rows in a 4” (10cm) square of single crochets.

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain (beginning chain)
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)
ea – each
sl st – slip stitch
BLO – Back Loops Only

Notes:

  • For the scarecrow’s mouth, it’s easiest to stitch on the mouth line first and then put the X’s over top of it.
  • For the pumpkin’s face pieces, there are no printables to copy. I cut basic triangles for the eyes and nose. Then I folded the felt over and cut out half of a smiling mouth shape so that when you unfolded it, the mouth would be symmetrical. (When you cut, begin at the fold and cut toward the center of the felt.) After cutting the mouth shape, you can then cut out teeth in any pattern you choose.
  • The pumpkin’s face is hot glued onto the bag.
  • All three bags in the Halloween Bag Trio are made the same with the exception of yarn color and the pumpkin requires a color change at the top for the pumpkin stem.
  • The bag is worked in the round to eliminate a seam.

Finishing

Before you stuff the bag, stitch eyes and mouth in place. I wanted mine off center, but it’s up to you how you place your parts. Once the eyes and mouth are stitched in place, add one ounce of fiberfill and secure the top of the bag using the Aran tie you just made. Tie with knot facing the back of the ghost.

Scarecrow

scarecrow

Crochet the bag pattern using the Buff yarn.

Nose

With Carrot (Make 1)

FC: Ch 5.

Round 1: In 2nd ch from hook, sc. Sc in next 2 chs. 4 hdc in last ch. Working along the opposite edge of the ch, sc in next 2 sts. 3 sc in last st. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Finish off. (12 sts)

Finishing

With a tapestry needle and black yarn, begin stitching on the scarecrow’s mouth. The center of his mouth is six rows from the FC of the bag. Once you get the main line stitched for his mouth, go back and stitch X’s over that mouth line.

Place the nose on the face so that the hdc’s are on the bottom. The base of the nose is between rounds 11 and 12 and centered on his face. You can stitch the nose to the face with Carrot if you wish, but stitching black lines all around the perimeter just like the photo shows is sufficient to hold the nose in place.

With sewing needle and black thread, attach the button eyes. After the eyes are secured, using the black yarn and a tapestry needle, stitch 2 eyebrow lines above the buttons.

Stuff the bag with one ounce of fiberfill and tie the top with a few strands of raffia.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the Halloween Bag Trio pattern and Happy Halloween!
