Rag Quilt Baby Hats and Booties

Hello Everyone!

I’m so excited to give you the patterns for the hats and booties that match the Rag Quilt Style Baby Blanket! There are three size options available for both the hats and the booties. Perfect for a growing baby!

These patterns are easy and work up seriously fast, which is great if you’re looking for something to give as a gift short notice or you just don’t have a ton of time to spend crocheting.

I’ve also included two trim options. If you feel like the ruffle is too feminine, simple single crochets can replace it. I showed the results in the grey version.

Here’s a pin for your Pinterest boards!

The stitches you need to know to make the Rag Quilt Baby Hats and Booties are the slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and double crochet 2 together (dc2tog). If you are unfamiliar with the dc2tog, I found a quick little video by CreatiKnit showing how it is done. You can see that video here.

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain

sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
dc2tog – double crochet 2 together
sl st – slip stitch
FLO – front loop only
BLO – back loop only

Notes:

  • When working the Buttercup and Ivory striped hat (in whatever size you choose), I found it easier when attaching the new color for the next row, to (instead of making a slip knot, inserting the hook into the stitch, YO and chain 2) tie a knot using the tail from the previous color and the new color I added. I then inserted the hook into the stitch, YO with new color, drew back through the st and then chained 2. It took away an extremely noticeable seam that I didn’t care for. This is just one way of changing colors and only a suggestion. Do whatever you feel comfortable with. When making a solid color hat, these instructions are not necessary.
  • The ruffle border is optional. The substitute suggested in this pattern is for a simple single crochet border. Each choice can be interchanged among all of the sizes of the Rag Quilt Baby Hats and Booties.

*** American crochet terms used throughout.

  1. That is a great suggestion, Sarah! Some of my first patterns that I wrote 2 years ago are not the same quality in crochet language that I make now and this was one of them. I really need to go back and update the older patterns so that they are of the same quality. Now, to find the time. Thanks for commenting!

  2. I found this pattern (I’m doing the newborn booties) to be a little tricky and some of that is my own learning curve. However, I would suggest that you consider putting a stitch count at the end of each round so that people can more easily identify if/when they make a mistake (because I usually make a few before I get it right!) The patterns are really cute and I hope to have success eventually.

  3. I’m so excited that you enjoyed the pattern and that you found it to be accurate and clear! You are very welcome and I hope you enjoy the hat pattern just as much. Thanks for commenting!

  4. I made these adorable booties today. Your pattern is one of few that I have found to be totally accurate and your instructions were very clear. Thank you so much for sharing. Next on my list to make is the little hat with the ruffle trim.

  5. You’re so welcome! I’m so glad that you like the pattern and that is will go with your great granddaughter’s outfit! Thanks for commenting!

  6. Hi Marcie! The medium hat continues to Round 16 and the large hat continues to Round 17. Each hat size has its own instructions under the blue heading for the size. I hope this answers your question, but if you meant something different, just let me know. 🙂 Thanks!

  7. I have a question. Do the medium and the large hats stop after the widening rows (7&8). Or should they continue like in the smaller pattern? The first one goes several more rows.
