Upcycled Pumpkin Garland

I love pumpkin everything!!!

Autumn is my most favorite season and I just adore pumpkins—carving them, eating foods made from them and, best of all, decorating with them!

As some of you may already know, I’ve become a bit obsessed with seeing just how many things I can make using the 1″ plastic ring that can be found around the lid of a water bottle. So far, I have created acorns, hearts, shamrocks, stars, and (even though they use a 1.5″ plastic ring I still count them) poinsettias and sunflowers!

Now, these sweet little pumpkins don’t have to be made into a garland. You could also make ornaments or small photo frames out of them. How fun!

Upcycled Pumpkin Garland

Materials Used:

• Red Heart Super Saver in Carrot – 7 oz/198 g – 364 yds/333 m
• I Love This Yarn in Brown – 7 oz – 355 yds (from Hobby Lobby)
• G/6 (4.25mm) hook
• 8 – 1” plastic rings from around the caps of water bottles
• Packaging twine: 2 – 6” pieces and 7 – 8” pieces
• Green floral wire (26 gauge)

Finished Size Approximately:

One pumpkin is 2 3/8” wide x 2” height

Gauge:

Not important

Abbreviations:

sc – single crochet
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch

Notes:

• Round 2 is worked in a loop that isn’t normally used and a photo explanation is included to illustrate the instructions.

Instructions:

With Carrot

Round 1: 18 sc around a ring. Sl st in 1st sc.

Round 2: Working in the loops behind the stitches for the entire round (see photo),

sl st in next st,

*2 sc in next st,

2 hdc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st*

Sl st in next 4 sts.

Repeat from * to * one more time. Sl st in next st (behind Round 1).

Turn the pumpkin so the tail is facing down.

Finish off. Weave in end.

Stem

With Brown

On top of the pumpkin where you slip stitched in 4 sts, attach brown to 2nd sl st of Round 2. Sc.

Hdc in next st, ch 3,

Sl st in side of hdc (see photo).

Sc in same st as hdc.

Sl st in next st.

Finish off. Weave in ends.

Wire Vines

Cut 3” pieces of floral/craft wire, one for each pumpkin.

Fold the wire in half to make a “U” shape.

Insert the wire into the first brown single crochet you made for the stem.

Using your G/6 hook or something similar, wrap the wire around the handle part of the hook and roll it toward the stem.

Slide the hook out of the coil.

Repeat with the other end of the wire.

Finishing

Cut 7 – 8” lengths and 2 – 6” lengths of packaging twine. With an 8” length, run one end of the twine through the 4th orange stitch down from the stem. Run the other end of the twine through the corresponding orange st on another pumpkin. Tie the two ends into a bow.

Repeat with all of the pumpkins until they are strung together in a line, held together with twine tied into bows.

At one end of the garland, run a 6” length through the 4th orange stitch down from the stem and tie the ends of that twine together to form a hanging loop. Repeat on the opposite side of the garland with the second 6” length of twine.
