Compass Afghan

compass afghan

Since the Compass Afghan consists of granny squares, you can essentially make this blanket any size that you wish from baby blanket all they way up to a California King! Each square measures 7″ x 7″.

This project is easy in that you only need to know the single crochet and double crochet stitches. All of the squares are made exactly the same. To make the changing directions of the open spaced lines of each square, you simply turn the squares! Nothing to it.

The border uses the Moss Stitch, which is easier to execute than read the directions for in the round. (That’s just my opinion.) If you feel that you’re having trouble with it, there are many, many tutorial videos available to watch on YouTube.

My finished blanket ended up being 45″ Wide x 51″ Long when I made seven rows of six squares and I ended up using almost all of the eight skeins of yarn that I had. (That includes the border) You can design your blanket to be a square or a rectangle and have as many or as little amount of squares as you wish.

One other thing I love about this blanket is the yarn I chose. I picked up the Stitch Studio by Nicole in Navy Speck from A.C. Moore when they were closing, but if you can’t get your hands on some of that, I know that Red Heart has a “fleck” line that is basically the same.

If you’d like to use a different weight yarn for this project, you certainly can! Just know that your finished square will be a different size than the example here, which would affect how many skeins you would need and how many squares you’d need to make.

I would also recommend that you use the size hook listed on the package and one size smaller. The larger hook would be the one you use for the foundation (starter) chain and the smaller hook would be used for the remainder of the pattern.

Okay, let’s get started!

Compass Afghan

Materials Used:

  • 4 skeins of Studio Classic by Nicole in Navy Speck — 260 yds/238 m – 140 g/4.9 oz
  • 4 skeins of Studio Classic by Nicole in Silver Speck — 260 yds/238 m – 140 g/4.9 oz
  • Or any size 4 medium weight yarn
  • H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook — My favorite hooks that I use daily!
  • I/9 (5.50 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and sewing blocks together

Finished Size Approximately:

45” Width x 51” Length (Each square measures 7” x 7”)

Gauge:

13 dc stitches and 8 rows in a 4” (10cm) square.

Skill Level:

Easy

Abbreviations:

FC — foundation chain (starting chain)

ch(s) — chain(s)

st(s) — stitch(es)

sc — single crochet

dc — double crochet

sl st — slip stitch

Notes:

  • The ch 2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a double crochet and you will not stitch into it when crocheting the next row.
  • The blocks are all identical except that the silver ones are turned on their sides when stitching together. This is optional, but please pay special attention when attaching your blocks if you choose to turn one color because it is easy to forget and stitch them on wrong.
  • For one 260 yd skein of yarn, you can yield 6 – 7 squares. Feel free to make this blanket any size that you wish by adding or removing squares. You can easily make a baby blanket up to a king size or more if you wish!
  • The moss stitch border adds 2¼” on all sides.
  • To keep your squares from being too tight on one side, I recommend using an I/9 (5.50 mm) hook for the FC only and then switching to the H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook for Row 1 and beyond. This is optional.

*** American crochet terms used throughout.

  4. Hello Erica,
Can’t wait to make this blanket for my grandson.
I am a big fan of Stitch Studio by Nicole yarns and very sad that our local AC Moore had closed. I was on the Premier Yarn web site and they are now carrying Stitch Studio Classic yarn.
    Best regards,
    Sandra
