Fall Foliage Pillow

Hi friends!

I just loved how the Fall Foliage Afghan turned out and a good friend of mine suggested that I make a matching throw pillow to go with it! How could I say no?

This Fall Foliage Pillow is easy and takes very little time to work up. It uses a 16″ x 16″ pillow form and less than one skein for each of the colors.

Even if you didn’t want to make either the blanket or the pillow in Autumn colors, you could choose colors based on your home decor or even seasonal colors for another holiday. I think that different shades of blues and whites would make a gorgeous winter themed blanket and pillow! I may have to try that some time…

Tamara Kelley from Moogly blog has created an excellent video tutorial on how to work the double crochets over top of chains. Her pattern is very similar to mine with only a few differences. Be sure to check out her video at this link if you are having trouble with the stitches. It may feel a little awkward at first, but keep at it! It does get easier and more natural as you practice.

    • 3 oz of I Love This Yarn! in Burnt Pumpkin – 7 oz/199g – 355 yds/325 m
    • 2 oz of I Love This Yarn! in Brown – 7 oz/199g – 355 yds/325 m
    • 5 oz of I Love This Yarn! in Cranberry – 7 oz/199g – 355 yds/325 m
      Or any medium weight yarn.
    • I/9 (5.25 mm) hook – My favorite hooks! I use them daily!
    • 3 – 1 1/8” (28 mm) buttons
The buttons used in the example were purchased at Hobby Lobby. They are called Sew-ology Buttons (811794)
    • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
    • 16” x 16” pillow form or fiberfill (polyfill)
    • 2 stitch markers

Finished Size Approximately:

16” Width x 16” Height

Gauge:

13 double crochet stitches and 6 rows in a 4” (10cm) square.

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
ch(s) – chain(s)
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Notes:

  • You can make any size pillow you desire if you use a foundation chain with a multiple of 4 chains plus 2.
  • The pattern is made up of four rows per stripe of color.
  • The Fall Foliage pillow is comprised of three separate panels that are single crocheted together along their edges to create a removable pillow cover. No button holes are required since the buttons slip easily between the stitches.
  • You have the option to make a non-removable cover without buttons as well. Simply make 2 Panel A’s and single crochet them together

Instructions for all panels:

Note: Follow the color changes outlined above for each panel. Each color stripe has four rows.

FC: Ch 58

Row 1: In 4th ch from hook, dc. Dc in next ch. *Ch 2, skip 2 chs, dc in next 2 chs* Repeat from * to * across. Dc in last ch. Turn.

 Row 1
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st the ch 2 comes out of, ch 2, skip next 2 sts. *Crocheting into the open FC below (the stitches will cover the 2 chs from the previous row), dc in the next 2 FC’s. Ch 2, skip next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * across. Hdc in the top of the ch 3 from the previous row. Turn.

 Row 2 finished

Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in same st the ch 2 comes out of. Crocheting into the open sts from 2 rows below (the stitches will cover the 2 chs from the previous row), dc in those next 2 sts. *Ch 2, skip next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts from 2 rows below* Repeat from * to * across. Hdc in last st. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st the ch 2 comes out of, ch 2, skip next 2 sts. *Crocheting into the open sts from 2 rows below, dc in those next 2 sts. Ch 2, skip next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * across. Hdc in the last st. Turn.

Finish off if changing colors. Continue to alternate Row 3 and Row 4 for pattern. There are 4 rows per stripe.

Final Row (to close the gaps)

For your final Sungold stripe of each panel, complete 3 rows following the repeat instructions above. For the final row of each panel:

Ch 1, sc in the same st the ch 1 comes out of, hdc in the next 2 unworked sts from 2 rows below, *sc in next 2 sts, hdc in the next 2 unworked sts from 2 rows below* Repeat from * to * across. Sc in last st. Finish off. Weave in ends.

Finishing

Using a tapestry needle, attach three buttons to Panel B (the medium sized panel) evenly spaced along the last cranberry stripe just below the final sungold stripe (approximately on Row 22). The buttons will easily slip in between the stitches of Panel C, so no button holes are necessary.

Lay Panel A (the largest panel) flat on a surface as shown in the photo below.

fall foliage pillow Panel 1.1

Take Panel B (the medium sized panel) and lay it on top of Panel A (Wrong Sides facing), matching up your Cranberry stripes along the bottom.

Note: There is no Right or Wrong Side of the panels. Just consider the side that has any ends sticking out to be the Wrong Side. Then you won’t have to weave in ends since they will be on the interior of the pillow cover.

Take Panel C (the smallest panel) and place it on top of Panel A and Panel B (with its Right Side facing up), lining up the Sungold stripes at the top.

Here is a side view:

Side view of stacked panels

Where the three panels overlap (see photo above), there should be three cranberry stripes stacked on top of each other and also three sungold stripes stacked. Place a stitch marker through all three sungold stripes that are stacked. This will hold the panels in place, keeping the color stripes lined up for stitching. Repeat with another stitch marker on the opposite side of the pillow cover.

Trim

Using Brown, attach your yarn in any st and begin to sc evenly around the entire pillow cover. Make sure you work through both thicknesses. In the middle portion of the side edges, make sure you work through all three thicknesses. Keep your color stripes lined up. In each corner st, you will (sc, ch 2, sc). Sl st into the first sc you made for the trim. Finish off. Weave in ends.

Insert the pillow form into the pillow case or stuff with fiberfill. Slip your buttons between the sts of the 1st cranberry stripe of Panel C. (Approximately Row 3.)

  1. You’re very welcome! I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed the pattern and your family wants some too!

  2. Beautiful pattern and colors! I’m thinking of making the afghan, then making only the front panels of the pillow. I’ll attach those to the bottom middle of the afghan so that it can fold up into its own pouch. I know those types of blankets or throws were very popular back in the 90’s; this would be a perfect candidate for that. Beautiful pillow, but if you need to cover up, just unbutton and unfold! Time to get started on Christmas gifts…

  3. Absolutely! You can use whatever stitch you feel most comfortable with. Just make a starting chain and hold it up to your pillow form. It should reach the side seams without being over stretched or having too much slack. Then make as many rows as it takes to cover your pillow. If you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! Thanks for commenting!

  4. Hello again! No, it isn’t a typo. It depends on the brand of hook that you’re using. I use Boye hooks and the I/9 just happens to be a 5.25 mm, but I have seen different brands of hooks with different sizes. Either way, I don’t think the .25 mm difference should affect your final product at all. I hope this helps! Thanks for commenting!

  5. Hi Erica!
Thanks for providing me with the pattern for the Fall Foliage pillow. I am in Canada and the I crochet hook is 5.5 mm. Is this just a typo?
    Thanks , Deborah

  6. Hi Deborah! I’m so glad to hear that you like the pillow design! The written out pattern should be here on this blog post or you can purchase the written out pattern through either Etsy or Ravelry for a very small price. I just wanted to give you some options. I hope this helps!
