Flurry Wrap

I absolutely love the color combination that I used for this Flurry Wrap. There is just something so classic about Ivory, Country Blue and Grey! Don’t you agree?

If you’re a fan of prayer shawls, wraps, or even super scarves, you’re going to love this pattern! It’s a seven row repeat, but please don’t let that intimidate you. The stitches are all easy — single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. The most difficult stitch is the double crochet two together and I use the word “difficult” loosely.

So the Flurry Wrap is light enough to be a gorgeous lacy super scarf…

As you can tell, this wrap is really long…like 85″ long! You definitely don’t have to make yours as long as this. If you prefer a shorter wrap or are a petite size, simply omit some stripes. Each stripe measures 3.5″ so that should help you judge what length you would like yours to be.

You could wrap this around your shoulders and hold it in place with a beautiful pin or, as I have done, with an Asian style hair stick! It’s fun to think outside of the box and find new uses for items that were never meant to function that way. What would you use to hold your shawl in place? Let me know in the comments below. I’d love to hear your ideas!

The worsted weight yarn makes this shawl heavy enough to fight off a chill and the lovely lacy stitch pattern keeps it light enough to wear as a scarf. My personal favorite style is the first photo where the opening is on the side — I love that style! There are just so many ways to wear a simple rectangle and I can’t wait to try them all!

Materials Used:

  • 1.5 skeins of I Love This Yarn! in Ivory – 7 oz/199 g – 355 yds/325 m
  • 1 skein of I Love This Yarn! in Dark Country Blue – 7 oz/199 g – 355 yds/325 m
  • 1.1 skeins of I Love This Yarn! in Greymist – 7 oz/199 g – 355 yds/325 m
    Or any medium weight yarn
  • I/9 (5.50 mm) crochet hook — These are my favorite hooks! I use them daily!
  • Tapestry needle

Finished Size Approximately:

85” Length x 23” Width

Gauge:

16 single crochet stitches and 9.5 rows of the pattern in a 4” (10cm) square.

Special Stitches:

Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog)

YO, insert your hook into the designated st, YO and draw back through. YO and draw through 2 loops. YO and insert hook into next st. YO and draw back through. YO and draw through 2 loops. YO and draw through 3 loops.

Abbreviations:

YO – yarn over
FC – foundation chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
ch(s) – chain(s)
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
dc2tog – double crochet 2 together
sl st – slip stitch

Notes:

  • Each color stripe consists of seven rows and is about 3.5” tall.
  • Finish off after every single or double color stripe.
  • If you crochet over top of your tails as you finish off after each color stripe, you won’t have any ends to weave in other than the final end from the border.
  • This shawl is very long. You can customize it to your own size preference by working less rows. You can also use this stitch pattern for any other project by using a multiple of 8 stitches plus 3 for your foundation chain.
  • The Greymist skein count is 1.1 simply because it used a very small part of a second skein. If you choose to make your shawl shorter than the example, you will only need a single skein of the Greymist.
  • In Row 3 and Row 5, the (dc, ch 2, dc) st is referred to as a V-st in the final st counts since it is shaped like a “V”. It includes the first ch 4, dc in the count for Row 5.

With Ivory

Round 1: Attach yarn in any corner st. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc). Sc evenly to the next corner. *In the next corner st, (sc, ch 2, sc). Continue to sc evenly to next corner* Repeat from * to * 2 more times. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Don’t turn.

Round 2: Sl st into ch-2 space of corner, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) all in corner space. Skip 2 sts, *(sl st, ch 2, 2 dc) into next st. Skip 2 sts* Repeat from * to * to corner. (See Note below) @ In corner st, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) all in corner space. Skip 2 sts. Repeat from * to * to next corner. @ Repeat from @ to @ 2 more times. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Finish off. Weave in end.

Note: I did have to fudge the border a little since the stitches did not work out evenly. A few sides (at the end of the sides just before a corner) had 1 stitch left or 3 stitches left. I just went with it, pretending like there were two. As long as your corner stitches end up in the actual corners, it will be fine to miss a stitch or skip an extra stitch. Just don’t skip 4 or more because your wrap will start to pucker.
