I am so proud to present the Santa Wreath to you today! This is an easy and super quick project that you could make in just a few evenings or one day if you have the time.

Lion Brand has a yarn line called Go For Faux and, oh my, if you haven’t gotten your hands on some of it yet, you really need to get to the store! This stuff is so soft and luxurious that I want to make a wearable with it and I’m not even a faux fur kind of girl.

I’m not an affiliate for Lion Brand, but I just wanted to share how impressed I was with this yarn.

So anyway, this is what was used for the Santa Wreath beard. It has a slightly higher price tag compared to other yarns that I typically use, so that is why I didn’t extend the “beard” the entire way around the wreath frame. I wanted to keep the project at a decent price point so more people could enjoy making one.

As for the remainder of the yarn choices, you can use any brand of yarn that you wish. The pattern is written for size 4 medium weight yarn so if you use anything larger or smaller, it will affect the size of your finished hat.

One word of caution: I would not recommend using this Santa wreath as an outdoor decoration. It will not hold up well in extreme weather. But wouldn’t this look adorable in your home, office, classroom or church? I think so!

So let’s get on with the pattern!

Materials Used:

Finished Size Approximately:

13.5” Width x 13” Height

Gauge:

13.5 hdc stitches and 10 rows in a 4” (10cm) square.

Special Stitches:

Triple Crochet (tc)

YO twice. Insert hook into indicated st, YO and draw back through. *YO and draw through 2 loops.* Repeat from * to * 2 more times.

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain

ch(s) – chain(s)

st(s) – stitch(es)

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

dc – double crochet

tc – triple crochet

sl st – slip stitch

Notes:

  • For the beard – it may be difficult to see your stitches because of the furry nature of this yarn. You will need to feel the stitches with your fingers. Just make sure to keep your counts right so that your rectangle is straight.
  • For the beard – Use the entire skein of yarn. I ended up with 24 rows.
  • For the red part of the hat – you WILL NOT TURN your work, but continue to work in the same direction for each round.
  • For the white part of the hat – you WILL TURN your work after each round, ch 1 and then work into the sc stitch that the ch 1 comes out of.
  • For the holly – the pattern is written for the two leaves to remain attached to each other, however, if you prefer them to be two seperate pieces, you can finish off after Round 2 of the 1st piece and then simply repeat the instructions for the 2nd piece. It’s optional.
  • A photo tutorial for making a pom pom with your fingers can be found at this link: https://www.highlandhickorydesigns.com/make-pom-pom-using-fingers/ or you can use a pom pom maker if desired.

Assembly

Wrap the Beard rectangle around the wire wreath frame with the seam in the back as shown in the photo below.

Using a tapestry needle and white yarn, stitch the seam closed along the entire length of the beard. If desired, tack stitch the beard to the frame to prevent sliding.

Flip Santa wreath over to work on the back.

Slip the hat over the top of the frame where the wire is still exposed. Be sure to cover the ends of the beard on either end so that none of the frame is showing once the brim is folded up.

Using the tapestry needle and white yarn, tack stitch the underside of the brim to the beard and through the Santa wreath frame to secure. Repeat for the opposite side.

  1. Hello! I’m not sure if this particular pattern would look good as a real hat simply because it only has increases on the left and right sides rather than the entire way around like a normal hat. This keeps the hat flat to sit on a wreath rather than round for a head. I hope that makes sense. But if you do try it, I’d love to hear about it! Thank you for your sweet words and thanks for commenting!

  2. Hi Erica! I absolutely love this pattern! My question is, is it possible to continue growing the hat for a child/adult size hat? I love using the hdc and this is it! Thank you sharing your ideas, patterns and knowledge! Happy Holidays!

  3. Ha! I worried that I might be releasing it too late for this year. I’m so thrilled to hear that you love the design. You’re very welcome for the pattern. Have a very Merry Christmas!

  4. Thank you so much, Pamela! I’m so excited to hear that you like the pattern. And I know your mom will love it too! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  5. My mom lives in assisted living and I change out the wreaths on her apartment door with the different seasons. I had made one for spring, 4th of July, Autumn, and Halloween but had needed a pattern for Christmas. I think this one fits the bill. I love it!

  6. I love it! I’m not going to try to rush this year but I feel my brothers and their families would love it too! So this is next years project for five families! Plus mine of course! Thank you for the pattern!
