UPDATE!!!

There’s now a free video Corner To Corner crochet course if you’re new to crochet! Click the link here for the complete list of video classes!

This pattern was one of the easiest C2C patterns I’ve ever worked on. There are no corners or decreases to worry about — only increases. The color changes were basic and simple especially if you are only using two colors. I used 3 bobbins in total.

If you are using the variegated yarn as shown in my example, it’s best to use one skein at a time of the main color without cutting or using separate bobbins. This will keep the color changes continuing without interruption as you work through the project.

But, if you are using a solid main color, feel free to have as many bobbins as you wish since the color is constant throughout.

When using one skein of the main color, you will need to carry your yarn along, crocheting over top of the blue strand with the secondary color — in this case, the white.

I used two bobbins for the white, one for either side. If you carry the white along through the blue, your shawl will be thicker than it already is. This project is definitely great for cooler weather wear.

The example uses mini C2C, which is the half double crochets instead of the double crochets. You can adjust the size of the finished shawl by simply stopping after a completed heart (preferably on one of the two solid rows of blue that follow a completed heart). More instructions on making a shawlette or child size shawl are included in the “Notes” section of the pattern.

If you’d like to make the shawl larger than the 64″ width, you can use double crochets instead of half double crochets. Just keep in mind that you will need more yarn than what I recommend.

Soaring Hearts Shawl

Materials Used:

Finished Size Approximately:

32” Height x 64” Width

Gauge:

8 ¾ blocks and 9 ¼ rows in a 4” (10cm) square.

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

st(s) – stitch(es)

ch(s) – chain(s)

sl st – slip stitch

Notes:

  • This pattern uses the C2C (corner to corner) crochet technique. With C2C, you can either begin using a chain 4 and work half double crochets (also called mini C2C) or chain 6 and work double crochets for your blocks. This example is worked using mini C2C or chain 4 and half double crochets. If you choose the chain 6 with double crochets, your finished shawl will be larger than the example.
  • I encourage you to crochet over top of any loose ends as you work to help reduce the amount of ends to weave in after you’ve finished.
  • Since the chart could not be triangle shape like the shawl, you will stop working with the chart after Row 85. Do not carry on with the white blocks (Row 86 – 169) to make a square unless you would like to make a blanket. The written instructions for the chart stop at Row 85. Row 86 is not C2C, but rather a finishing row to level out the choppy edge.
  • If using a variegated yarn as your main color, I recommend using only one bobbin or skein of yarn at a time to keep the proper color changing going seamlessly. You will have to crochet your hearts right over top of (or carry along) the main color yarn. You will have 3 bobbins total – 1 blue (main color), 2 white (secondary color).
  • To make a shawlette or child size shawl, simply stop on a row that is two solid blue (main color) rows after a heart is complete and then skip to the instructions for Row 86 – the finishing row.

*** American crochet terms used throughout.

Abbreviated Instructions:

Using Blue (Main Color)

FC: Ch 4

Row 1: Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Hdc in the 4th ch. Turn. (1 block)

Row 2: Ch 4. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Hdc in the 4th ch. Sl st in the ch-2 space on the first block. Ch 2, 2 hdc in ch-2 space. Turn. (2 blocks)

Row 3: Ch 4. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Hdc in the 4th ch. *Sl st in the ch-2 space on the next block. Ch 2, 2 hdc in ch-2 space.* Repeat * to * one more time. Turn. (3 blocks)

Row 4: Ch 4. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Hdc in the 4th ch. *Sl st in the ch-2 space on the next block. Ch 2, 2 hdc in ch-2 space.* Repeat * to * two more times. Turn. (4 blocks)

Continue along with pattern in same manner, increasing the repeat by one with every row. Change colors according to the chart or written instructions.

Single Page Graph

Note: Stop using this graph after you finish Row 85. Do not work the white triangle part of the graph from Row 86 – Row 169. The Final Row 86 instructions are listed below these graphs.

Graph Broken into Three Parts

Note: When you print these three graphs out, you will need to piece them together for the full graph. It is in threes to make it larger.

Final Finishing Row

To get the final flat row to the shawl at the top instead of the choppy C2C final row, you will need to work the following instructions for the final row. This works no matter where in the graph you stop.

Note: If you work this pattern using double crochets instead of the mini C2C half double crochets, you will want to substitute a ch 3 for the ch 2, dc for the hdc and then substitute 2 hdc for the 2 sc.

Row 86 [RS]: Ch 2, hdc in same st ch 2 comes out of. In next st, 2 sc. *In next st of next block, hdc. In next st, 2 sc* Repeat from * to * across.

Border

Ch 2. Working along the next edge of the shawl, sc in same st you just worked your last sc into,*Ch 2, sc between next 2 blocks* Repeat from * to * across to next corner. In corner, (sc, ch 2, sc) all in same st. Repeat from * to * again along the final edge of the shawl. In last corner, sc, ch 2. Sl st in 1st st of Row 86.

Finish off. Weave in ends.

Tassels

The Tassels are optional. If you are interested in making tassels for this or any project, I have created a photo tutorial for your convenience. You can see that photo tutorial here at this link.
