Fall Jars

fall jars sitting on table

I’ve been sitting on the Fall Jars idea for quite a while now and I am so thankful that I finally sat down and created them! They are so easy to make and you can use them in any way that you’d like — not just as flower vases.

UPDATE!!!

So I thought that these adorable jars would look awesome with candles inside — long tapers or even votives. You could also consider autumn scented potpourri. How about coffee beans? I’ve always wanted to fill jars with coffee beans because I love the smell. Just me? Okay… Ha!

The construction of this jar wrap is extremely easy. If you can single crochet and work basic “X” stitches with yarn and a large eye needle for the cross stitch designs, you are golden!

Also, if you’d prefer to use tapestry crochet, you certainly can do that too. I chose the cross stitch design because I wanted the puffy letters to really pop! I used a double strand of the brown to achieve this look, but you can use a single strand if you prefer.

These wraps fit snugly around quart sized canning jars, which are also very inexpensive. I used cotton yarn that I had leftover from another project that you can see here so it’s also a great stash buster project!

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain

st(s) – stitch(es)

ch(s) – chain(s)

sc – single crochet

Notes:

  • You will use less than one skein of each color. You can reasonably make several wraps with one skein.
  • The letters can be cross stitched on as shown in the example or you can use tapestry crochet. The choice is yours.
  • The wraps are made in flat panels to make it easier to stitch the letters on. Then you will sew the two ends together using yarn and a tapestry or large eye needle and slide the wrap around the jar.
  • The jars are shown in 4 different colors, but you can use the same color for all four or you can change all of the colors to your preference.

*** American crochet terms used throughout.

Instructions:

Panels

Make 4 in your choice of colors

FC: Ch 44

Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook, sc. Sc in every ch across. Turn. {43 sts}

Row 2 – Row 16: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, sc in every st across. Turn. {43 sts}

Finish off. Leave approximately 10” tail for sewing later.

Using the graphs below, a tapestry needle and the brown yarn (double strand), begin to cross stitch one letter onto each panel. Each sc st is equal to one block on the graph.

Finishing

Fold the panel with the Right Side of the letter facing itself and the shorter ends of the panel are touching. Using a tapestry needle and the long tail left from finishing off the panel, whip stitch, mattress stitch or use any joining method you prefer along that edge. Finish off. Weave in any ends.

stitching the seam

Flip the wrap right side out and slide down over your jar, centering it as shown in the main photo above.
